Great Talents, Great Scope: A Cross-field Exhibition of Vessel Art

Introduction:
Although ceramics is considered a craft with a long history and tradition of its own, it has crossed the field of fine art through various innovations and movements. People reconsider and recast the concept of beauty of vessels and wares with an aim to bring together crafts and daily life in aesthetic harmony. Modern ceramics came and ceramics artists started to work with vessels in different ways. Some discarded the notion of function altogether and decided to use the vessel as a mere objects for artistic expression, which in turn gave birth to the concept of Vessel Art. And artists began searching for a wider definition of what constitutes a vessel more in tune with the new concept of creative freedom. Today it is customary for ceramics artists to reconsider the functionality of vessels and the nature of the materials as they explore new ways of crossing the field of craft or design. It has become one of the most significant points of discussion about ceramics in contemporary art.
This exhibition aims at exploring vessels in the historical context of Taiwanese ceramics. It provides an outline of the aesthetics of functional wares, which includes reflections on creativity and vessels by prominent artists. Artists from different fields have been invited to collaborate with ceramic artists to create new and innovative works. The exhibition demonstrates how talented artists are able to embrace very disparate forms and ideas in a creative way.
