Imaging the Blue and White--The Impact of the New

Introduction:
The beautiful blue and white porcelain brought about a transformation all over the globe that went beyond cultural exchange. The journey of the blue and white porcelain around the world, suggested by Robert Finlay in his book The Pilgrim Art: Cultures of Porcelain in World History, marked the official start of the rise of globalization. That is, since 1709, the year when the German alchemist Johann Friedrich Bottger, under the demand of the monarch of Saxony Augustus II of Poland, finally discovered the secret of the creation of porcelain, the blue and white porcelain in the West has evolved at a tremendous pace, further leading to the rise and fall of Western and Eastern civilization. From the perspectives of the globalized culture, the Exhibition wants to present, starting from the Chinese porcelain from imperial kilns and civilian ones in Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, the process of traditional blue and white porcelain becoming the common language of a visual culture. Being passed down and innovated from imagination, the blue and white, through several centuries, has always maintained its influential status in cultural image as well as the aesthetics of arts and crafts.
