Sevres 1740-2008:From Madame de Pompadour to the 21st Century

Introduction:
This exhibition is a chronological journey as well. Behind the Bed of Roses at the entrance, there is the true and romantic story between King Louis XV and his mistress, Madame de Pompadour. After the introduction to the exhibition and an overview of the meticulous techniques, we gradually enter the artistic world of Sevres.

The display area is arranged by the time periods and accordingly decorated with the period interior decor and backdrops, so the visitors could get into the mood and historic atmosphere of the past. In the 18th century Sevres was part of the then-popular Baroque and then neoclassical movements. The 19th century craftsmen expanded on and elaborated their unique Sevres style and advanced their techniques. In the first half of the 20th century, Sevres saw the infusion of brand-new styles, Art Nouveau, geometric forms, and abstractism. The latter half of the century featured a clear shift to modernism and cooperation with internationally renowned artists. In these cooperation Sevres has demonstrated their incredible flexibility to integrate and value the differences of the contemporary styles. In one visit to this exhibition, you can gaze upon the works of modern masters like Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann, Ettore Sottsass, Jean Arp, Yayoi Kusama, Zao Wou-Ki, and Yongping Huang, as well as several centuries worth of European art.
