Thoughts of Culture and the Speech of Objects: Contemporary Ceramics in Mainland

Introduction:
As suggested by the title Thoughts of Culture and the Speech of Objects, this exhibition adopts a phenomenological perspective to review contemporary ceramics in the Mainland and its necessary relationship with its traditional Chinese cultural heritage and contemporary society and lifestyles. Thoughts of Culture refers to thoughts on traditional culture, while the Speech of Objects refers to the various possibilities of expressing the individual nature of materials. Whether the ceramic works in this exhibition escape the functionality of traditional ceramics, use compound media to alter the fixed definitions of clay and ceramic, or arrive at a compromised selection, all of them reflect changing cultural predilections and ways of thinking in Mainland China.

Thoughts of Culture and the Speech of Objects collects works by outstanding young to middle-age contemporary ceramists in the Mainland to reveal the current status of contemporary ceramics in the Mainland, which has developed in an explosive manner due to the refulgent cross-flows between traditional culture and contemporary life. The exhibition may be considered as an examination of the whole of Mainland contemporary ceramics, while Surveying and Testing the Foundations: Contemporary Ceramic Sculpture in Taiwan presents new thinking in contemporary ceramics. Together they represent an important exchange on ceramic art within the history of cross-strait artistic exchanges, and they reveal trends in the development of contemporary ceramics.
